Do you know where this spot is? It is not accessible to everyone.

Young Bucks

David Hathcock spotted these deer last week near Rattlesnake Creek just off Cherokee Road, Stratford Hills/Oxford and was kind enough to send in the photos.

I cropped one of the pictures to give you a better look.

Sunday in the Park Photos

Sunday in the Park, 2010…always hot, and always fun for the neighborhood. The photos were taken by David Hathcock and Page.

Only slightly related, did anyone get photos of Music in the Park? I wanted to go but was up in DC.

Twitter & Flickr Reminder

Just a reminder that H&H is on Twitter @hillsheights. I don’t have a fancy-pants phone so if I am not on my computer it might take me a little while to respond.

Also there is the Hills and Heights Group on Flickr as seen above. Join the group and add your photos. Currently there are 43 members and over 850 photos some are simply stunning. It is very interesting to see how other view our little piece of RVA.

Rainbow Connection

Photo by Anne Soffee, H&H resident, realtor, author, blogger, and photographer extraordinaire.

If anyone else out there captured the rainbow either send it directly to me or post a link in the comments. Thanks to Anne for her contribution. For the record all 15 of my attempts failed but officially I am blaming it on my location.

Photography Meetup Group Starting the Year at FH Park

The Richmond Photography Meetup Group will be starting 2010 by meeting up in Forest Hill Park.

Some details about who they are from their “about page“.

Very simply, this is how we operate:

  • The group will primarily be socially oriented.
  • We will have a monthly photography theme.
  • We’ll have a monthly location shoot on the theme.
  • There will be a re-occurring monthly meeting where we share what we shot.

It looks like they prefer that you join the group before showing up (makes sense to me) and you can do that here. The deadline for registering for the meetup at Forest Hill Park is January 1st.

Westover Hills Library Circa 1959

Amazing what a few decades will do! The trees that are on this lot now cast the library in almost constant shadow but they weren’t even planted when this pic was taken August 19, 1959 by the Adolph B. Rice Studio. I found this image on Flickr in the collection of The Library of Virginia. The Westover Hills Library had just opened in July of that year, previously having been at one point in the basement of the Stone House at Forest Hill Park. The library is slated for renovations next year to update some of the original fixtures.

Calling All Photogs

It is no secret that I am a fan of photography.  I was thrilled to see that RVAnews is starting a new photo feature.

Every month we’ll choose a theme, and snap-happy folks can submit any photos they may have taken lately that, to them, best represent that theme. We’ll choose eighteen of the most striking and publish as a gallery. The possibilities! The diversity! The viewing pleasure!

Details:

September’s theme is “Last Days of Summer.” Submit your photo to RVANews Flickr group by September 30, and we’ll put together a stunning gallery of what summer’s end means to eighteen different people.

Submit those photos and share your work with the world. Also don’t forget at the same time to add them to the Hills and Heights Flickr group and the photos will show up this blog at random intervals.

Farmer’s Market Goodness

I couldn’t make it to the South of the James Farmer’s Market this Saturday but luckily David Hathcock was able to get down there and provide some photos as well as a nice description. Enjoy the images as you sit in your cubicle and watch the last hours of summer drift away.

Just another day in Paradise at the South of the James Market.  Peppers, tomatoes, fresh greens of several varieties.  The tiny Japanese turnips are back in season, great raw sliced into a salad.  Flowers from several vendors are still holding blooms, and because they are cut fresh, are lasting at home much longer than retail flowers. Baked goods perfume the air all around the market, Tex and Big Daddy smoke drifts. Apples from around the area, as far as Nelson County.

SOJFM From Several Angles

Ted Johnson the chef owner of Mezzanine restaurant comes across the river to the South of the James Farmer’s Market has this to say.

“I think it’s a huge plus to any city to have people recognize … where your food [is] coming from,” Johnson said, “and to support the local economy and the farmers that are becoming extinct in America.

The quote came from an article on Richmond.com that also produced this video.

Personally I think the slide show below or some of the posts from River City Food and Wine do a better job of capturing our farmers market. Pictures courtesy David Hathcock, Thomas Scott, and your H&H crew.

Pictures of Sunday in the Park With Friends

If you didn’t make it to Forest Hill Park on Sunday you missed a great time. If like me you brought your camera but not the camera battery you did not capture any of the fun. Luckily for us all David Hathcock remembered his camera battery and is kind enough to share his images. If anybody else would like to share a picture or two please send them on and I will post them.

Special shout out to all the volunteers and the primary sponsors: Friends of Forest Hill Park and Kathy Graziano. Additional sponsors and supporters of the event include: Dominion/Virginia Power, Westover Hills Merchants Association, Forest Hill Neighborhood Association, Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association, Ukrop’s Super Markets, Wal-Mart, Fulton Hill Properties, Sheriff C.T. Woody and Sue Durlak.

Empty Storefronts

In my travels around the neighborhood it seems that quite a few businesses have vacated the area. So I decided to take my camera and record what was out there. My journey started at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church for daycare drop-off and ended at Lowes for varnish pick-up.  I have lived in the neighborhood for 6 years so remember the old Ukrops (damn that place was small) and think that we currently have more businesses than we did 6 years ago but have not validated that theory.

Below is a slideshow of my trip.

Happy 4th All

The Westover Hills annual Kid’s Parade was a stunning success as always. Thank you Westover Hills Neighborhood Association and Laura Dysart. I have hastily posted some snapshots (no real editing at all) as a slideshow. If you would like a copy or a picture removed please let me know. It should advance to the next picture every few seconds.

Update 6/5RTD has a slideshow with a 1 second clip of the parade but we get more love in the print addition with a picture of Forest Hill resident Ramon & Patrick Pouzan and quotes from Laura Dysart.

Laura and Scott Dysart began organizing the parade about eight years ago with a small group of parents. Yesterday’s parade had about 100 kids participating.

“We love seeing the kids with their bikes and strollers decorated. It’s a lot of fun,” Laura said.

After the parade, their backyard becomes the nexus of the neighborhood with a snow-cone machine and popcorn maker.

“It’s a lot of fun,” they said as the festivities began to wrap up at 11 a.m. Most of the crowd had dispersed, and sons Brandon, 10, and Jake, 7, helped clean up.
