Two Opportunities To Help The James

Thanks to JRNH we get the reminder of two meetings this week of some of our local river advocates.

Riverfront Concept Plan

The city commissioned a study by  Hargreaves Associates to develop a plan for the RVA waterfront. Two weeks ago there was the first of 3 meetings to discuss the Richmond waterfront and the initial findings were presented. You can check out the slide portion of the study online.  James River News Hub has been paying better attention than me so [...]

Wednesday Meeting on the Riverfront Plan

On Wednesday, September 14th you have a chance to find out what Richmond plans for the riverfront and give your input. It will be interesting to see if the plan is entirely focused on the north bank of the river or if Manchester and other areas on this side of the river get any attention. [...]

It Could Be Worse

Vintage Richmond posted this reminder that we got lucky that we didn’t have severe flooding. I realize that is little solace to those of you without power or with an oak in your living room.

James River Park Clean-up

I saw this event on Friends of the James River Park website earlier and then promptly forgot about it. Thank goodness for James River News Hub that posted a reminder today. If you’re looking to do a good deed this weekend, the Friends will be picking up trash this Saturday, 9-11AM, at Pony Pasture. Be sure to [...]

Insects at Night on Friday

On Friday, July 29, children and their families are invited to come to the park’s headquarters at Reedy Creek, 4001 Riverside Drive, for a program called “Insects at Night.” This program offers a hands-on investigation of insects caught in light traps and is co-sponsored by the James River Park System and VCU. No fee or [...]

Be Wary of Rabid Animals

The advice about rabies applies year round but after a couple of incidents in James River Park it is worth reminding everyone to be wary of animals acting strangely when enjoying the natural wonders of our area. From an email I received; A rabid fox attacked two people walking along the James River on Sunday. While [...]

A Tale of Trash

People that litter are lazy, inconsiderate, scumbags. If you had the energy and means to transport 12 full beers, some chicken, a bag of chips, watermelon or whatever down to your favorite spot on the river you should have the energy and the common courtesy of cleaning up after yourself.

This time he let’s us all know about a three-hour innertube float down the James Saturday afternoon from Main Area West to Reedy Creek sponsored by James River Park. The tubers will meet in the Reedy Creek lot at 2 p.m. and expect [...]

Bee Lost

From CraigsList; Lost on June 21st between 3pm and 7pm, I was helping out a friend and took it off because I didn’t want to ruin it in the water. My favorite necklace, and I can’t find another one like it. Please return it! I’ll pay you for it. Location: 42nd St River. Its a [...]

Belle Isle Circa 1965

Another great image by Vintage Richmond. Crazy to see all the industry there. For a small piece of land that island has an amazing past.

Clean the James on Saturday

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday folks all along the James will be working to remove trash from in and around the James River. This is the 12th year of the clean-up organized by the James River Advisory Council. Last year over 1,000 volunteers removed 500 bags of trash and almost 300 bags of recycling. Online [...]

River, Trails, Greenway, Belle Isle Post

Apparently spending the weekend watching soccer, partying in Powhatan, Broad Apetit and lounging poolside made me miss a whole bunch of outdoor stories. Thankfully there are more diligent Outdoor Stewards keeping an eye on things. Keep reading for a round up and you can check out the ones that are most intriguing to you.

New York Times Looks at the James

Ten years ago, bathers in the James River, which wends through this old Southern city, wore ear and nose plugs to stave off infections from sewage runoff. Now, the river is stalked by blue herons and shad — symbols as potent as the belching riverbank ironworks and factories of the unfiltered, blue-collar past. More on [...]

Answer to Police Activity on Belle Isle Memorial Day

I read several Tweets and received a couple questions about a bunch (as many as 10 from one report) police cars heading to Belle Isle. Since it happened on the River I knew Phil of James River News Hub would eventually find out the details. The abbreviated version of Phil’s post, is that during or after a river rescue [...]

Free Fishing Weekend

When I was a kid I would spend hours climbing over rocks and trees, crossing the river 4 or 5 times to find the perfect fishing hole. I don’t think I ever came back with a fish but I do remember having a blast. If you are interested in casting your line, you can do [...]

Should there be more River Enforcement?

Last night as my sun burned body settled into my chair I watched this video on NBC12 (embedded below) discussing the fact that anyone in the river yesterday should have been wearing a life jacket. They only found one person that was wearing a life jacket. Anytime the river is over 5 feet you are [...]
