Volunteer crossing guard removed by RPS School Board
Not mentioned in the article is that yesterday afternoon and this morning that there was a Richmond Police officer serving as a crossing guard. It is unclear at this time whether or not that is a permanent situation. If folks driving along that stretch would obey the 25 mph speed limit and yield to pedestrians in the school crosswalks it wouldn’t be an issue. Another re-occurring issue is cars passing buses that are parked in front of the school with red lights flashing and their stop signs out.
A little law enforcement is often too much to ask for from law enforcement on the Southside.
May be time for some of those crazy flashy crosswalk things like down by the park. I would think having those near a school would have taken priority over the park.. I passed the school yesterday when they were shooting this clip and they had a police car parked about a half a block before the school with lights on. That seemed to get people to slow down a bit.
I’ve seen RPD fly through those flashing yellow lights; actually I’m the only driver I’ve seen stop for them. Why the school board would feel it necessary to stop *volunteers* from helping to keep school children safe is unfathomable.
I believe it within the rights of this volunteer to keep on keeping on. I have been told by RPS that sidewalks are public property. It seems that maybe the school board has no real say on her being there.
Perhaps the RPS school board should be worrying more about sending small kids to the unsafe Norell building, and less about how traffic is handled at Patrick Henry. It’s not even just about helping pedestrians, there are buses and carpool vehicles that jam things up right there. It’s a mess in the afternoons and a crossing guard won’t fix it.
@M I was pleasantly surprised that on the way back from the school yesterday a car two lengths in front of me actually stopped for the flashing lights. Maybe it was you but it was nice to see because you are right, too often folk ignore the flashing lights.
Yeah, RPS should not be allowed to stop a VOLUNTEER in a PUBLIC STREET.
Is this more of RPS trying to hinder PH?
The point is rps shouldn’t need a volunteer is rpd would do their job.
while we’re on the subject, as a single childless neighbor, I’ve no clue who to vote for for school board; suggestions???
Justin, in the 4th District, Kristen Larson. In the Fifth, the lady who is challenging Maurice Henderson.
Mamie Taylor for School.Board, 5th district!
My understanding on her (name?) removal was because she was not properly trained. My son attends PHSSA and I thought she did a very good job. Last two days there has not been anyone there stopping traffic.
Just out of curiosity – I was there when school let out yesterday, and there were two RPD officers crossing-guard-ing. Were they just there because we had fire trucks all over the intersection, or were they already there?
