Man shot on Belle Isle
Richmond police are looking for two men after a shooting at Belle Isle. (According to ABC8 it was around 1 a.m.)
Police say that man underwent in surgery Tuesday morning and is now in critical condition.
Police are still in the early stages of the investigation but this is what they know. Two men were near the hydroelectric plant when they were approached by two other men. Investigators believe it may have been an attempted robbery.
After the victim was shot, the man he was with called 911.
The police don’t have the best descriptions to go on. Both are white men, one in his 20′s with a shaved head. All they have on the other suspect is white and in his 40′s.Update Police have released better descriptions.
The suspects were described as two white men. One was in his early 20s to early 30s with a thin build, about 6 feet tall with shaved brown hair and wearing a white, short-sleeved T-shirt and blue jeans, and the other was in his 40s, also with a thin build, about 6 feet, 1 inch to 6 feet, 2 inches tall with shaved hair and wearing a blue baseball cap, a dark-blue, cotton, long-sleeved T-shirt and faded blue jeans.

More details from RTD:
Richmond police Capt. Yvonne Crowder said the victim was taken to VCU Medical Center and underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries after being shot twice in the chest at 12:07 a.m. at the municipal park, which closes at sundown.
Crowder said the shooting occurred while the 25-year-old victim and a friend were fishing in the area of the old power plant near the southeast corner of the island in the middle of the James River.

Our parks, particularly JRPS, need their own dedicated police force.

Thanks Scott. I updated the main body of the post.
I agree with the dedicated police force for JRPS comment. The solid tax paying citizens of Richmond clamor for that very thing yet the good folks at City Hall continue to ignore the apparent lawlessness of Belle Isle. Still feels like a free for all much of the time there.
I saw a lot of bizzarre and very drunk characters down there on Sunday. Security definitely needs to be beefed up. All this costs money of course. Money is VERY tight this year, but I think security, maintenance and staffing should be addressed, before the City starts acquiring more park land it can’t take care ofl.
Also, keep in mind that Marty Jewell tried to cut park funding by 1/3 last year.
In 16 years I’ve never seen as many people as I did visiting this weekend at the parks; security and parking must be increased
Just another example of why we should stay out of the parks after sundown.
Both RFD and RPD have had an increased presence over the last few years, but it just doesn’t seem to help. Where RFD was doing 1-2 person rescues every few weeks 10 years ago, pulling 5-9 folks out of the river during one day is not uncommon. This weekend there were more RPD officers than I have ever seen on the Isle. I would agree that a dedicated sub-Station on the Isle for each may provide better access points for services, but will it make a real difference?
If we really want Belle Isle cleaned up, we have to be willing to let go of the loose enforcement that has made it the party spot it’s become. Police need to start searching coolers for glass and alcohol at the two main access points and write tickets for underage possession and make those with alcohol either turn around or pour out their stash. It’s bad when someone can walk out there with a case in their hand and no one says a word. The people who feel comfortable partying it up these days are the same that don’t think twice about littering and are generally the ones causing all the problems.
