Fatal accident at Cherokee & Old Westham
From NBC 12;
A car and truck collided just on Richmond’s Southside Friday morning leaving at least two people injured.
The driver of the truck said he was headed down Old Westham Road when a car traveling down Cherokee Road struck the side of his truck. Witnesses say the car may have ran a stop sign.
Police closed part of Cherokee and Old Westham as they investigated a crash. We have a crew on the scene and will have a reporting coming up on NBC12 News at Noon.
The tweet from @RichmondPolice;
TRAFFIC ALERT: Cherokee Road @ Old Westham Road closed to traffic for at least next 2 hours due to fatal traffic accident #rva
None of the 3 news networks are reporting this as a fatal accident at this time 12:00 pm. Update: Confirmed at 12:17 by multiple sources on Twitter.
Several people are injured after two cars collided at an intersection in south Richmond Friday morning.
It happened just after 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Old Westham Drive and Cherokee Road. Police said two vehicles are involved and as many as four people are injured.
CBS6;
Neighbors told CBS 6 News’ Shelby Brown that a pickup truck and a car with teenagers inside collided when one of the vehicles ran a stop sign.
Residents spotted people being pulled from the wreckage and transported to the hospital.
Old Westham has a stop sign – Cherokee doesn’t.
And people drive so fast on Cherokee. :-( Hope it turns out everyone’s ok.
The truck was going down Cherokee toward Forest Hill under 25 mph and the car was speeding down Old Westham and flew through the stop sign across Cherokee in front of the truck
This was definitely a fatal accident. It is a pretty bad scene down there. They have everything blocked off.
NBC 12 is reporting that:
“Witnesses say the car may have ran a stop sign.
Officials with Richmond Public Schools were on scene of the accident.
Police closed part of Cherokee and Old Westham as they investigated the crash.”
I hope that this is either a typo/bad editing or that any students involved are ok.
Scene cleared at 2:45. Truck suffered minor front end damage. Car was very badly damaged on the front drivers’ side. As reported above, the stop sign is on Old Westham, and is set back from Cherokee to allow room. There was an RPS vehicle on the scene at noon.
just saw on the news the poor kid did die, that is the 2nd one in a week in our area, so sad
That stop sign is partially obscured by trees. While it’s entirely possible that the car’s driver was not paying attention or willfully running the stop sign, it’s also entirely possible that he/she didn’t see that sign at all. There are intersections like this all over the city — tree maintenance is terrible here.
From the photo on the news, the stop sign was barely visible for the trees. My prayers are with the Shands family.
Please report obstructed signs so that the city can be aware of where trimming is needed. Or, if it is near your home, get out there and trim it yourself.
I looked at the intersection this morning. Sign visibility is good all the way back to the next intersection.
Yes, the sign is visible. That is not the problem…I go that way at least 5 times a day. It is a very difficult to see the cars coming up Cherokee (especially if they are speeding, which is typical there). You must pull PAST the stop sign to see if anyone is coming. Also, once you are stopped past the sign, cars pulling onto Old Westham can have difficulty getting by you. It is a very dangerous area in general.
