Free Weatherization Kits For Seniors On Friday
This Friday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Southside Community Services Center at 4100 Hull Street, the city of Richmond will be giving away starter home weatherization kits to Richmond seniors aged 65 and above.
Up to 250 weatherization kits, one per person, will be distributed by DPU employees and volunteers to Richmond city seniors free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. These starter kits are designed to help city seniors get a head start on their home weatherization projects by providing such items as weather stripping for doors and windows, low flow shower heads, draft stoppers for outlets, a door sweep, and a fluorescent light bulb.
“DPU looks forward to bringing this annual event to Richmond seniors each year. Weatherizing your home is one of the best ways the average homeowner can achieve the most benefit with the least amount of effort and expense. It not only saves money, it also helps the environment and is one of the many aspects of our city’s sustainability efforts,” says Mayor Dwight Jones.
Representatives from the city’s Departments of Social Services and Human Services, Project Homes formerly known as ElderHomes, and Senior Connections will be on hand to distribute and provide information on fuel assistance, senior housing and activities, winter weatherization tips, in-home care for the elderly and local senior activities. Light refreshments will also be provided.
Seniors must be present to receive a kit and are asked to bring identification to verify residence. For more information, call DPU’s Communications Division at (804) 646-5463. [info provided by the city]
