Rumsey has found theories about the pyramid’s background but nothing definitive. According to those stories, the pyramid could mark a slave burial site, or it could simply be a distinctive feature from an azalea garden that graced that section of the park decades ago. Or it could be a memorial to Confederate soldiers, like the much bigger and more elaborate granite pyramid in Hollywood Cemetery.Alfred Baird of Chesterfield County, who visited the pyramid with Rumsey earlier this month, said his father told him in the 1930s or’40s that the pyramid marked the burial spot of a bear that inhabited the park around the turn of the 20th century.
