Two of the three
FOUND: 3 Dogs in SpringHill neighborhood today between 19th and 20th street. Two dogs are yellow lab looking dogs, one is a shaggy black husky/chow mix looking dog. Collars, well cared for. No tags. I have them in my backyard at the moment but will have to take them to Animal Care and Control if not claimed by end of day. Contact Claire Wilker at clairewilker@gmail.com.
I have emailed a friend and she is going to run home and check to make sure that the one sitting in the foreground isn’t her dog.
If you need to reach Claire and don’t have email access, please call her on her cellphone @ 352-445-9000. Thanks to Claire for looking out for this crew!
Cool lookin’ dogs… Hope they get reunited with their owner!
They were great boys. The yellow labs are now at Animal Care and Control where they can be claimed by their owner. The black husky/chow looking dog is still hanging out in the neighborhood. We were unable to corral him. Trying to get AC&C to pick him up tomorrow as well if he is still around.
I think you could have keep them for at least a day. Not sure if you did the dogs a favor, taking them to the shelter so quickly.
I have no problem with Claire taking the dogs to Animal Care and Control. If their pet owners are responsible and they look to be from the conditions of the dogs, the shelter is one of the first places to check. Anybody that takes the effort to make sure a dog isn’t running around possibly to be struck by a car should be applauded not criticized.
Animal Care and Control can scan them for micro chips, and serves as something of a clearing house for lost pets. Not everyone is able to hang on to strays for more than a brief period.
There seem to be more than the average number of loose dogs turning up in the area lately, aren’t there?
Claire absolutely did the right thing. She took the dogs in, looked after them and kept them safe, gave them food and water, and contacted the neighbors via area email groups and this blog. And Richard is right – Animal Care and Control (a.k.a. “the shelter”) is where most folks will look if they lose their dog(s). For those who are not aware, the SPCA and most local dog and cat rescue organizations draw from the shelter population after the required a waiting period.
Agree with #s 6, 7, and 8. I commend Claire for what she did!! Claire made it very clear in the post that she would have to take them to ACC at the end of the day. If Bubba was so against it, he could have offered to house them for “at least a day”.
As a long time volunteer at RACC, I also applaud Claire’s efforts. RACC is an incredible organization run by one of Richmond’s true government heros, Chuck Marchant. I can assure you that every animal that comes through that facility is treated with the utmost care and respect. Each year, RACC re-homes HUNDREDS of dogs. And, they are the very first people folks call when their dog goes missing. Extensive effort on the part of RACC go into finding and contacting the original owner. For the unclaimed, RACC adoption stands are set up most every weekend across the city in a proactive effort to create exposure for animals in need. On a daily basis, the incredible staff at RACC work closely with walk in clients looking to find a new pet. The animals are treated kindly and respectfully. The people who work there are are truly making a difference.
Volunteer opportunities are always available. Volunteering may include holding a dog at an adoption stand, general support at the shelter, or even simply walking a single dog for 10 or 15 minutes. Many volunteers give only a few hours a week of their time, but those few hours make a huge difference. One dog at a time.
RACC is a friend to animals lost. Bottom line.
/ end of story.
Greg,
Well put, and excellent plug for RACC. They certainly do a great job and their staff is very friendly.
Hi,
My name is Wendy. I live on Fairlee road, and on Thanksgiving day my boyfriends black and white boston terrier got out of the fence unknowingly. The bad thing about it, he had a red coller and a name tag on with his name, address, the owners name and his phone numbe and no one has called!!!! He goes by the name Pede (peedee). He is a very loving and fun dog, he is not harmful in anyway at all. Pede’s owners name is Jerome and his phone number is 804 230 3835 and his cell# is 804 869 9530. Posters will be put up with a reward of $200.00 if he is found and brought back home safetly. I hope if some one did pick him up, they will do the right thing and bring him home or call since he did have his coller on with a name tag. If anyone has any info please call Jerome. Thank You very much.
