Local HandsOn Day Projects
Registration is now open for the 4th Annual HandsOn Day. 1 day. 1000 volunteers. Unlimited change. Saturday, October 29, 2011. I’ve provided links to 3 local projects but check the full list for other projects, throughout the city.
Westover Hills Elementary – Courtyard Cleanup
Westover Hills’ children need you! Join Communities in Schools to enable this school to offer hundreds of little people a cheerful place to play and learn. Once spruced up, the space will be used for teaching, reading, eating and playing in nice weather. All we need is YOU to make it happen!
Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts – Stop the Erosion
The PHSSA provides children of our diverse community with an academically rigorous science and arts based curriculum that emphasizes environmental awareness and social responsibility. The as-yet-unused school building’s grounds include some relatively steep slopes with severely eroded soils. Low terrace walls will be constructed to prevent further erosion; new soil will be added to the terraces, and native shrubs will be planted to provide erosion control, wildlife habitat, and educational opportunities for students as well as the entire community.
Swansboro Elementary School – Paint Me a Four Square
Remember how much fun you had playing hop scotch and four square back in the day? Little did you know you were not only enhancing your physical growth, but your emotional and social health as well. Come brighten the school day with Communities in Schools for hundreds of local elementary children by repainting their blacktop games. Volunteers will also spruce up the gardens which are used by Swansboro’s children, teachers, mentors and neighbors.
