H&H Happy Hour: Hot Apple Toddy

I could think of no better way to close out the H&H Summer happy hour series than with a drink toasting the change in season.  If you are like us, you have the windows open and are going to bed and waking up with a little more crispness to the air.  Having recently taken a trip to the mountains for a little apple picking with the family, sitting down on the porch sipping a warm apple toddy with a hint of lemon takes me right back to the orchard.  Walk with me through the orchard and through this recipe sure to warm your evenings here on Hills and Heights.

  • Apple Cider (not juice there is a difference)
  • Honey (Bearer farms used here and also in this drink)
  • 2 ounces whiskey or apple brandy
  • Lemon wedge for garnish
  • 2-3 whole cloves and a cinnamon stick

Heat apple cider until hot in a saucepan — you can heat with the cloves and cinnamon stick if preferred. Cover the bottom of a hot toddy glass with honey, then add whiskey or apple brandy.  Pour in hot apple cider, then garnish with cloves, cinnamon, and a lemon wedge.

There isn’t a more inviting drink for autumn I can think of and what’s better than packing the family up and heading to the mountains for some apple picking?  If you have never stood in an apple orchard and bitten into one right off the tree then you have really never truly tasted an apple.

Although this is the last in my summer cocktail series (fall is Friday) I will return next month with a new seasonal series especially for Hills & Heights called “H&H Saturday Soups and Stews” to be published on the 3rd Saturday of every month!  Thanks to everyone who has followed the cocktail series over the summer and I look forward to sharing some exciting recipes to share with family and friends.
