RideForJim Pedals in Next Weekend

RideForJim is an annual fundraiser started by Dr. Jack Haar, Professor of Anatomy at VCU, and his son Philip to support cancer research. The “Jim” in RideForJim is Jim Popp, who died of cancer in the summer of 2007. Jim was a superb athlete, trusted physician and beloved father and husband. Over $100,000 has been raised and offered in fellowships to first-year medical students.

There are two events in our area the weekend of August 20-21.

• Rider Rally Pre-Ride Party, Saturday, August 20, 5pm – 9pm, Crittenden Studio 201 West 7th Street (Old Manchester near Legend Brewery).
• Yorktown Finale Ride, Sunday, August 21, 8am Departure from VCU Massey Cancer Center.

Party Details
Come out and support the fourth annual RideForJim at this jumping pre-ride party. Located in the historic Corrugated Box Building in Old Manchester, this event celebrates past and present riders and recognizes our top fund raisers and sponsors.

The evening features music, including a parade by the Greater Richmond Pipes and Drums, Central Virginia’s largest bagpipe band, a pre-ride bike check, spin bike competition, full Italian dinner to fortify riders for the Yorktown ride, beer and wine tasting by Once Upon a Vine South, Legend beer on tap, an awesome silent auction, and more! Yorktown Finale Ride
Ride 70 miles from Richmond to Yorktown on the final leg of the historic TransAmerica Bicycle Route 76. The Yorktown Finale Ride is a supported, multi-pace, group ride that starts in downtown Richmond and ends at the Watermen’s Museum on the Yorktown waterfront. Rest-stops are provided in Charles City, Historic Downtown Williamsburg, and at the ride finish in Yorktown with food, music, and a tire-dipping ceremony in the York River.

Limited transportation arrangements for bikes and riders back to Richmond are available and included in the ride registration. A custom RideForJim cycling jersey will be awarded to all riders that raise over $200 in donations for their efforts, and riders get their own personalized fund-raising web page.

Rider registration includes a ticket to the Richmond Rider Rally Pre-Ride Party the night before where individuals and teams can compete for prizes and bragging rights in the spin competition.
