Be Wary of Rabid Animals

The advice about rabies applies year round but after a couple of incidents in James River Park it is worth reminding everyone to be wary of animals acting strangely when enjoying the natural wonders of our area. From an email I received;

A rabid fox attacked two people walking along the James River on Sunday. While the second victim was able to kill the animal, authorities are urging people to be cautious near the river, including Belle Isle.

The first attack occurred about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Belle Isle, when a man reported he was bitten by a fox. Several hours later, a man walking his dog on a path along Riverside Drive also was bitten after trying to chase the fox away. He was able to kill the fox, which was taken to a state laboratory, where it tested positive for rabies.

Employees who walk along the river and surrounding areas, including Belle Isle, are urged to be cautious.

The Richmond City Health Department is advising people to stay away from wild animals, and if bitten, to be sure to first wash and clean the wound with soap and water, then seek medical attention, call animal control and report the bite to your local health department. If possible, restrain the animal so that it can be tested.
