People that litter are lazy, inconsiderate, scumbags. If you had the energy and means to transport 12 full beers, some chicken, a bag of chips, watermelon or whatever down to your favorite spot on the river you should have the energy and the common courtesy of cleaning up after yourself.
Next time you are at a friends house just throw your empty bottle down on the carpet and walk away, let’s see how far you get. This logic completely eludes some folks when they go to the James River Park System. Fortunately for all of us, there are folks like Phil Riggan, who are willing to help out and clean-up after the lazy bums. Check out this story that Phil posted this morning on
James River News Hub.
In all, I’d estimate about 50 glass bottles and at least double that in beer cans. Probably another 60 soda and water bottles and cans. I filled one of the recycling bins, which was mostly empty before I began.
*blushing*
Thank you Richard. As I wrote “My point of writing about this isn’t to garner praise for volunteering at the river…I want people to be aware of how much work we have ahead of us to educate the naughty park-goers.”
Atleast this is only happening in isolated sections of the park. The secret spots are still pristine… oh wait, no they’re not. You wrote an article telling all the shitheads in town where all the undiscovered spots are… oops.
It’s awful really.

Nice one “HAH,” I clean that spot of the river too, and there were “sh*theads” down there before I ever wrote about it. BTW, the bad guys don’t read and my site isn’t that popular. Do something about problems you see instead of blaming others. Next time post with your real name and let’s have a conversation, not finger-point and whine.
Makes me want to cry seeing all this trash .
We need to bring back the commercial with the Indian shedding a tear when people litter. That really made an impact on me. I scolded a child last year when she threw empty soda cans into Forest Hill Lake 2 weeks after they reopened it and the parents told me to mind my own business. They were standing right next to her and thought it was funny.
Jeez louise , what are you gonna do with that mentality!
I go to the river early morning about 3 days a week. My average number of trash bags I fill is 3. If you cannot leave a place better than when you got there…maybe you shouldn’t go.

Linda — that is a shocking story. Is littering still a crime, punishable by fine? Perhaps some videos of these creeps in action, published somewhere public, would be helpful.
This comment on JRNH is insane and hilarous.
It makes me sad that just because you have a blog, you think it makes you ambassador of JRPS. You do NOT manage the park, nor are you a spokesman or expert on the subject. Nobody even asked you to do anything to help clean up. You know where you can stick your buckets.
Pack it in, pack it out…
Imagine the revenue which could come from littering fines in this area (including river goers)! When was the last littering ticket ever written in this city?
