H&H Happy Hour: Fuzzy Navel
I was feeling nostalgic while wandering the SOTJ farmers market this past weekend and was thrilled to see so many peaches available. I guess the nostalgia came as I was going through what drinking fads I seem to have gone through in my life. I dug back into the memory banks and remembered the mid-eighties…you remember…..
The big hair bands, the Rubiks cube, acid washed jeans, the first music video played on MTV. Then it hit me: The Fuzzy Navel - that refreshing summertime drink with training wheels (low in alcohol) that made me feel like a bartender.
- 1 1/2 – 2 ounces of Dekuyper Peach Schnapps
- Orange juice
- Fresh sliced frozen peaches
- Sprigs of mint <optional> or refer to the mint ice cubes from a previous H&H Happy Hour.
Add ice to glass with orange juice, then peach schnapps. Give ice mixture the old bartender pour into another glass then back to original to mix. Garnish with mint and frozen peach slices (peaches can be sliced and proped up on a cookie sheet – skin side down – and frozen).
This drink garnered it’s name from the peach (fuzzy) and the orange (navel). For you venturesome ones adding equal amounts of vodka to this drink, it would then be labeled the “hairy” navel. The more “hair” referring to the strength of alcohol in the drink.
So for the second post in a row (you remember the last one, Pimm’s Cup) we have a refreshing drink, light in alcohol. Stand by July 21st for the next H&H Happy Hour edition where I get back to basics by introducing you to bourbon, bacon, a shot glass, and some pickle juice. It’s gonna get crazy up in here!
What’s your nostalgic drink that just hasn’t made it into the glass of late?

I’m having a party tomorrow night and my nostalgic drink that will serve the masses is a famous concoction entitled “Riptide”. Once I explain the ingredients it will be hard for you to believe that this schwill is acceptable for consumption but it actually turns out quite good. Since my party is Caribbean themed I am substituting the normally used pink lemonade for frozen limeade mix. The following is enough to get 1 party started but for real pro’s make sure there is some BYOB as well.
In a large cooler mix together:
1-8lbs bag of ice
1-liter Cheap Vodka
3-cans frozen Limeade Mix (generic limeade works fine and costs way less than “Mixer”)
6-12 sliced limes, oranges, and other citrus
1/2 liter of citrus soda
and the kicker…..1-12pack of light beer.
Not only is this mix plentiful, tasty, and cheap, you really make your dollar travel pretty far and new friends are always made. In the past we’ve used Milwaukee’s “Beast”, Bud Light, and Natty Lite for the beer. The citrus soda is “optional” but I do recommend some is used as something needs to cut the mix down a bit, if not for flavor, just because everyone is getting older and this isn’t a party in the fan 10 years ago. If you are single, watch out, cause you will be making the walk of shame the next day.
Been craving Vodka or Gin Gimlets. I remember passing on the too sweet Rose’s Lime and doing the squeezings of fresh limes.
Not for the fragile however.
This drink would have gotten me into trouble back in college. Love those frozen peach slices.
Oh that is easy, Gin and tonic. My wife and I drank them all the time when we were dating. Even took a vintage travel case/bar set we found a Good Will on our honey moon to New Orleans by train, we were going for a whole 1920′s thing. It was a great ride!
@Willis you be careful and have fun tomorrow night. I recall this being served in a trashcan in the past! The pink flamingos you wake up to on Saturday were not in the front yard when you went to bed!
@Trish that is one I have not seen in a while hmmm….
@Mary with “hair” it can definitely sneak up on you!
@Gregory I am all about vintage! I would like to see black and whites of you and the wife sitting in the “club” car on that trip!
Vintage drink for me would be an amaretto sour. Might have to stop by the liquor store on the way home tomorrow…
Vintage drink? I used to serve and a bunch of old Lithuanian ladies in Chicago would order “Rob Roys”. Can’t even remember what is in it.
