Opening Day of the South of the James Farmers’ Market

It wasn’t night, but not quite day when the vendors began to arrive at the South of the James Market opening day.  Some had driven more than an hour, some had not slept.  The chaos of an anthill gave way quickly, and by 7:45, the pizza fires were lit, flowers and produce from Madison to Westmoreland to Charles City were spread.

The largest crowd in the history of the SOTJ market had many vendors sold out by 10 am, and a unique success for our community began another season.

Thanks to David Hathcock for the photos and story.
