Karen Kester aka The Bug Lady is starting a neat project at Reedy creek.
I initiated a long term project in cooperation with VCU Biology undergraduate students to transform the old butterfly garden at Reedy Creek (next to the James River Park headquarters Building) into an “Insect-Plant Garden”. Our goal is to develop a sustainable flower garden (native and cultivated species) with accompanying educational materials to encourage visitors to interact with nature.
We are now in the process of cleaning out the beds and starting our battle with the wire grass. The next step will be to prepare the beds for transplants and new plantings. Once established, the beds will require weeding and occasional watering. Local vendors have offered to donate some materials.
If you have materials or plants to donate, or are interested in helping with the clean-up and maintenance, please contact me directly. Our greatest need at this time is landscape cloth and staples.
This summer, I will be leading a “Bug Hunt” and a “Black Light Night” (donations appreciated). As soon as these functions have been scheduled I will post a message to our neighborhood group.
Also, Ralph White (JRP Park Manager) would appreciate donations of VA native woodland plants for other areas in the park. If you have some to share, please let me know.
You can contact Karen by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
