Southside Plaza Sued Over Accessibility
Southside Plaza along with Mom’s Siam, Bonvenu restaurants (Carytown), and Sticky Rice (Fan) are being sued by Nicole Swann, 2010 Ms. Wheelchair Virginia. The reason for the suit is non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Some of the particulars in the suit include; a lack of accessible parking spaces, bathrooms, ramps and seating areas. RVA News has the details.

No one wants to see folks in wheelchairs anyway…so they should just stay at home….right? Can anyone get on-board with this? Come on people!
Larry,
Right…they should just stay at home! But seriously, I think one of the biggest things wrong with people today is that they sue sue sue at the drop of a hat. In today’s economy most small business owners have very tight margins not allowing them much left over to deal with structural changes. Plus does this chick even go to Southside plaza? Lord that place is a dump and should have been torn down years ago.
i can’t help thinking that a minority is dictating, unreasonably at times, to the majority here. this would seem to be an instance where the free market should come in to play – if the business owners want disabled customers dollars then they will provide access for them all the way up to he cash register!
i understand (and support) that we should have wheelchair accessible street crossings and other ada compliant public structures, but i can’t imagine that enough wheelchair bound people would ever bring in the amount of money necessary to warrant, on paper at least, the costs to accommodate them in some of the small businesses here in our historic city.
“ADA compliance cases rarely go to trial, as most are settled.
“Typically what happens when we file a lawsuit on behalf of a client — we let the opposing counsel know that we want to get it done as quickly and inexpensively as possible,” Zweben said.
Zweben said that after the suit is filed they will have an expert conduct an inspection and write a report. The report is used as the basis for the settlement agreement, which outlines what needs to be done over a certain time frame.”
My guess is that these suits are more for calling attention to the problem rather than for really punishing businesses.
YO…YO…YO…Sew don’t you be dissing the SSP. I have many fond memories of that place….the old video world used to have an incredible pornography collection on vhs….duck pin bowling and buying spin discs at wet willies. Those were the days when SSP was a happin place
Larry,
By no means am I dissing your memories and what used to be. However, it’s in the past (like VHS and spin discs). The place, now, is an eyesore.
By the way, Fan Video has an incredible porn section. I highly recommend it (they may even have some on VHS there too!)!!
