James River UFO – An Environmental Art Performance Event

This Saturday, February 26, 2011 1:00-4:00pm, at Huguenot Flatwater there will be a unique sight floating down the river. Art student Sadie Runge will be presenting UFO. Unidentified: A Feathered Objection to Polluted Water. The art piece will consist of cleaned chicken feathers in a contained “floating sculptural barrier”. The motivation for the work is to call attention to nonpoint source nutrient pollution and water quality legislation. Chicken feathers are being used since they serve as a natural absorbent of heavy metal ions from water effluent. Style Weekly had an article in December about the first attempt to launch this project and the first link provides more details including the best spots to view the work.
