Great Backyard Bird Count This Weekend

Spotted in the 5200 block of King William Road awhile back

Take a look out your window this weekend or take a walk and keep track of the birds you see for this weekend’s Great Backyard Bird Count. The bird count starts on Friday and goes through Monday. The reason scientists need your help is as you would expect birds don’t stay in one spot so no single scientist or even group of scientist could cover as much as thousands of volunteers. Last year results tell us that there were 1,475  Common Grackles spotted in Richmond.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.

Update: JRNH has the details on a couple events at Lewis Ginter, Brown’s Island, and Pony Pasture.
