Grateful Dead Rock Debate
James River News Hub has reopened a debate on the well-known Gratefull Dead rock that resides on Belle Isle. The question is asked, “Is it art? Is it graffiti? Share your thoughts!” Make sure and share your thoughts at JRNH as well as here since it was Phil that brought up the question and I’m just piggybacking on the debate. It is also worth noting, this isn’t the first time the debate has surfaced.

It is ugly.
I resent anyone taking away from the natural aspect of the river and its rocks. I don’t go there to see what band you listen to. Get a tattoo, make a t-shirt, leave a natural environment alone.
Graffiti. Artist should be prosecuted. The only difference between this artist and all the other taggers in the city is their drug of choice.
Graffiti.
Graffiti. However, this is the least of the problems associated w/ this location. While I can appreciate a cold beverage on the river, an attempt in consealing & moderating consumption is necessary in order to preserve the atmosphere – need to reduce the trash factor…both refuse & people.
I agree. It’s gotten to be way too much over there. We never even attempt any more.
Well, to me, grafitti is art. But the issue here is, somebody sees this and does another and then there’s another and so on and so on and then it becomes not so attractive.
not grafitti. yes maybe it shouldnt have ever got painted but since it has it got its own janitors. there is a group thats there every year that cleans that rock every day. and its realy has nothing to do with the band. most of them dont even like the band. they just want somewhere to go to get away from the city. plus that rock is a landmark now so anyone that tries to paint over it can get arrested.
Getting away from the city includes escaping from the less attractive aspects of city life….like noise, trash and yes, grafitti. While I’m not against creative expression, this qualifies as an eyesore, IMHO.
qualify as eyesore thats your opinion
