The New MickeyD’s is Open
The new McDonald’s on Forest Hill Avenue is open for those of you addicted to Big Macs. Anne Soffee, H&H resident, realtor and writer for Richmond Magazine.com had a post up last month titled Food That’s Not Food. Her post takes a look at McDonald’s and fast food in general. Make sure and read the full post before you comment on the little tidbit below.
Obviously, I think the food is unhealthy and empty and loaded with all of the things we try to avoid. But more than anything else, I hate the way it is implied that you are weird and uptight and un-American if you don’t eat at McDonald’s and don’t take your kid there on a regular basis. It’s got a kind of They Live/Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe that creeps me out.
In related news I went across the river on Tuesday and had a great 100% locally sourced, antibiotic and steroid-free beef cheese burger from Boom Boom Burgers in Shockoe Bottom.

The first time I ever ate a full fast-food meal (at McDonalds, as a matter of fact) I got a splitting migraine and was down for three days.
Quoth the Raven “Never more”.
Big former English teacher ups for the Poe reference!
I saw the headline and I was gonna comment, but I see now that I don’t have to! Very well! Carry on!
As the parent of a three-year old, I aspire to NEVER step foot in the new McD’s. Why would I when there is a Jason’s Deli right across the street?
Jason’s Deli is a sad excuse for a deli. I’ve never come to understand what people like about that place. I’d rather drive the ten minutes to Coppola’s or get a sandwich at Ellwoods before I get their mediocre fair.
I try to stay out of debates but when it comes to sandwiches in RVA I can’t keep quite. In my mind it goes Chiocca’s, Coppola’s and then every one else and never, ever Subway. I have been known to hit Jason’s for their Beefeater but haven’t tried anything else.
“Why would I when there is a Jason’s Deli right across the street?”
Because Jason’s also serves high-sodium, overly fat, processed crap, just in slightly different physical form?
OK, I had no reason to comment until Richard.H brought up Chiocca’s.
Best. Sandwiches. Ever. In fact, I was thinking about hitting the basement Saturday with my son — he’s never had the pleasure of dining in at Chiocca’s.
P.S. I also will never go to the new McDonald’s and I fear for Stratford Hills when Benny’s is gone.
I’d like to 3rd(me) and 4th(my wife) the Chiocca’s vote. And add that it is a great place to meet for drinks.
By drinks, I mean beer.
I luuuuuve Chiocca’s, even more since the smoking ban. It’s a much more comfortable place to take the kid for sammiches. As for Jason’s, I will say that you can eat much healthier there than you can at the other fast food options in the hills/heights area. As in any eating establishments, you can make good or bad menu choices. I particularly like their mediterranean wrap with hummus/turkey/mixed greens and olives, with a side of fruit, you’ve got yourself a healthy lunch.
I’m glad people like Benny’s. The one time my wife and I ate there it was downright nasty. There literally wasn’t one thing we ate that was good.
Um, Page? That Jason’s Mediterranean Wrap isn’t any healthier than a McDonald’s cheeseburger, which has less sodium, roughly the same fat and half the calories of the wrap.
Healthy indeed.
Um, Area Man? Chill out.
What did Jason’s Deli do to you to incite such scorn? Did you seriously look up the nutritional info for Page’s lunch? If so, did you take into account the size of the sandwiches and the quality of the ingredients? Sheesh.
Jason’s Deli is not perfect but it’s an easy place for me to feed my kids where I know they use no high fructose corn syrup, no dyes or artificial colors, and no nitrates. My kids’ meals come with a side of organic apple slices or organic carrots and organic low fat milk.
Where do you get your “healthy indeed” deli sandwiches?
JASON’S DELI HAS GLUTEN FREE BREAD AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. A GREAT ADDITION TO THEIR MENU.
MCDONALD’S IS DOING A BOOMING BUSINESS.
LOTS OF NOT SO SMART DRIVE THRU CUSTOMERS THOUGH. 10 CARS WILL BE BACKED UP BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE NOT USING THE 2ND DRIVE THRU LANE.
Well I gotta jump in. First, real food is never served through a car window. Second,do your self a favor and visit

I agree on Chioccas and love Coppolas but for a sandwich craving I to Nicks!
E.A.T.
Thank you Tim…..I’ll be eating lunch there today….if it is better than Chiocca’s, I’m already impressed.
“As the parent of a three-year old, I aspire to NEVER step foot in the new McD’s.”
LOL…yeah…my son is 2…hopefully he’ll never see the inside of a McD’s either.
Noreen, thanks for the info. We had not been to Jason’s before but went yesterday specifically so my husband could get a gluten-free sandwich and he says it was AWESOME. It’s been a long time since he’s been able to order a sandwich in a restaurant!
And Willis & Mike, I am with you — we’re 5.5 years McDonald’s-free so far and hope to keep up the streak.
Yeah, but where else can you get the .99 options? And their fries have always been amongst the best fast food fries. A little grease and fat now and then does a body good!
