It shouldn’t happen, but it does. Given the unfortunate realities of life – it’s stupid not to lock your car!
I watched the folks AAA sent open my car with a crowbar and balloon. Sort of a hi-tech versions of a coat-hanger. Moral of the story: just because you can’t figure out how somebody got into your car, don’t assume you left it unlocked.
It’s not just about locked or unlocked cars,it’s about leaving items of interest in plain view.If you are going to leave a gps unit in your car put it somewhere it can’t be seen and that includes any kind of holder or bracket for it.

I’m just amazed at the number of people who leave their cars unlocked around here. While its true that folks can break into your car locked or unlocked the average thief wants to get in as quickly and easily as possible. They’ll pick an unlocked car over a locked car any day. Every time I read one of these stories anywhere it’s 99% of the time about folks who leave their car doors unlocked. And clearly the thieves around here know it and take advantage of that fact. So when folks leave their cars unlocked it actually attracts crime.
Plus when you don’t lock your car and things are stolen from it insurance won’t replace them because you are considered negligent. Why would anyone NOT lock their car? What purpose does an unlocked car serve?
