We are very excited to have the library open again. I just glanced at the new floor plan – I wonder why they located the kids section right next to the computer section?
I think the floor plan looks good. The librarians can see all the computers and the teen section from the desk. The kiddo section, which is the loudest section when kids are there, is separated from the computers by long stacks of books, and the quiet adult reading area is all the way around the corner.
Can’t wait to get in and check out books and be able to return them in the book drop from my car!
I was inthere today: there were several people using the computers and there were a couple of small children near the front window: it was very quiet, the shelving acts as a very effective sound baffle.
Well done!
We went today. The design elements were great and everything is well divided and quiet as Stuffa said. Definitely a nice space.
As the parent of 2 young children, I must admit that I miss the coziness of the old children’s area. It’s very formal w/2 cute little tables and a 2 arm chairs. Nothing comfy to curl up on w/a book like the big old stuffed dragon or the rocking chairs at the West End and Downtown locations. Maybe I just missed the mom/toddler friendly reading spot. Also the nice new bookshelves are set up in such a way that I couldn’t see my 3 yr old who was sitting at a table looking at books while I was looking thru the shelves of books (in the old design, the picture books circled the kid section so the was no line of sight issue). In the diagram above the shelves marked dvds also include children’s books and all the baby/toddler board books. To look on those shelves you need to be all the way down one set of book shelves w/your back to the children’s area. I used to like the big tub of board books. Now they are on shelves near the dvds. Maybe things will be tweaked as people start using the space.
Small quibbles for the overall great new space. So glad to be able to walk to the library again!
