Two Local Schools Have Special Guests
Patrick Henry and Westover Hills Elementary welcomed two different sets of guests yesterday, one provided music, the other did some reading.
Westover Hills had Ensemble Shanbehzadeh stop by and the kids enjoyed some “lilting trance-like melodic phrases of the ney-anban (double-reed bagpipe) punctuated, supported, and enabled by purposive Persian rhythms”. The second half of that sentance is how Chris Bopst describes this Richmond Folk Festival performer in a recent article on the must sees of the festival. According to a comment on that article the kids had a blast dancing.
Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts was visited by the First Lady of the Commonwealth. Maureen McDonnell stopped by in celebration of the national Read for the Record literacy program. The goal of the program is to call attention to the growing problem of illiteracy in our children.
If anyone was at either event and has a picture to share please send it in and I’ll add it to the post.

I think Kristen Larson will have some pix.

Westover Hills gets visitors encouraging dancing. PHSSA gets a guest encouraging reading.
Sundagger, the reading program “Read for the Record Day” was held in every Richmond Elementary school. I couldn’t find who was reading at the other schools, but I can understand why the first lady might stop by the new charter school as it’s a cause the current governor seems to be behind. Here’s a link to a media alert about the reading program.

And Westover was one of 11 schools that had performers from RFF scheduled to perform.

Considering that none of the kids at PH knew who was reading to them, they could be bummed to have missed out on the music!
Saw the bluegrass, Cajun, blues and Haitian groups last night along with Ensemble Shanbehzadeh last night. The outstanding performance goes to Ensemble Shanbehzadeh. See them if you can.
