Woodland Heights Civic Assoc. Meets Tuesday
Tuesday, June 29 is the last meeting for the summer of the Woodland Heights Civic Association. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Woodland Heights Baptist Church. Representatives from Parks and Recreation and the police as well as the area’s councilman will also attend. Items that will be discussed include problems at Fonticello Park and the current spate of crime hitting the neighborhoods.

In the next Newsletter please include a piece about when it IS appropriate to dial 911. There seems to be an unwillingness to use 911 or generally take an active, assertive eyes-wide-open approach to crime in Woodland Heights. Perhaps if our neighborhood were less “passive and contemplative” we would not serve as such easy targets to our criminal visitors who are “aggressive and thoughtless”.
I realize that it takes a certain personality type to be willing to live in urban neighborhoods close to high crime and poverty areas but that does not mean we should stick our heads in the sand and ignore what is going on, hoping it won’t happen to us. We are clearly more intellectual and emotionally mature than the criminals visiting our neighborhood….but are we SMARTER?
Sometimes I think not.
I’m not really sure how one can arrive at that conclusion about Woodland Heights residents.
For once I agree with #2.
While the Woodland Heights residents seem to be more “artsy” and therefore more trusting then their more aggressive and business minded kin on the other side of the park, I suspect that Woodland Heights gets more than their share of local crime because of the physical characteristics of the area.
There are simply more opportunities for concealment and escape than afforded by the more open landscapes of Westover Hills.
And I have no evidence to support this, but I would suspect that the residents of other parts of South Richmond might be more likely to have on hand the tools for effective self-defense and that the thugs and preps know this too.
