Tax Break for Hurricane Preparedness Starts Tomorrow
During the next seven-day period starting tomorrow. Purchases of certain supplies and equipment needed for hurricane preparedness will be exempt from sales tax. All the information you need is here. This is the time of year I also say to myself, “I should put together a kit” and it never happens. So far my kit consists of 3 gallons of water. This lack of preparation is amazingly short-sided since in our first year here we went over 7 days without power due to Isabelle. How many of you have kits?

We do! It’s not perfect, but I got a large rubbermaid bin at Target and filled it with canned and dry foods, gatoraide, batteries, matches, cat food, baby food, pain reliever, first aid – most of the things that are on those hurricane/emergency preparedness lists. Plus gallons of water. It was actually fun to put together once I set my mind to it. My thinking for the bin was that it should be something we can grab in a split second in case of evacuation and know that we can get by for a couple of days with it. Every year I try to go through it and replace expired items. (Not so good at that detail….)
Did anyone ever figure out what they did with all that ice during the late stages of Isabel?
I asked them during a briefing at the command center ( they were so proud they had gotten on top of it) and they all looked at me like I had two heads, but couldn’t give an answer.
I mean, I could see it for the first couple of days but what good would it be a week or two in?
In any case, I’m not worried. I’ve still got my food supplies from Y2k, including that 1000 gallon water bladder.

Isabel was pretty much a Charlie Foxtrot for the city, from what I could tell. It did provide the city leadership with a checklist for what to do the next time, though.
