The Herring are Running
Technically they are swimming but there are a lot of them as evidenced by this email I was forwarded;
If you have never had the opportunity to see the huge schools of fish in the James river, especially along the Pipeline Rapids NOW is the time. I have never seen the schools of fish this thick. The water is relatively low and clear, great for seeing the huge schools
Hike along the pipeline trail starting near 14th street on the North side of the river and walk upstream along the pipe. Polarized sunglasses will help you see the vast schools of herring that have swum upriver to spawn.
Also, this coming weekend is the Gear Swap, Fish Festival, and earth day celebration! Sunday April 25th 11-4. Bring your gently used gear for sale, or stop by and check out some of the great deals on used boats, bikes, skis, and all kinds of other outdoor gear.
I haven’t checked it out but if anyone takes some photos send them this way and I’ll share them with our readers.

Thanks for the info! Anybody know if there’s a best time of day to see them?
Nothing fresh yet this year, but here’s an opii from 2009

It is great the James River is having such fantastic river herring runs. I live on the Cape and some of our best historic runs are getting counts of 108 river herring in a season… even after extensive remediation. Would love to see pictures if people have any.
here’s a story from the local paper http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/sports/recreation/fishing/article/herring_spawning_in_the_james_river/339299/
