History of Manchester by RTD

We are approaching the 100 year anniversary of Manchester becoming part of the city of Richmond. This morning’s paper has a nice article giving you some of the details of how it all went down including a timeline. Did you know that Manchester used to be called Rocky Ridge?

There are several events going on in honor of the event.

The Valentine Richmond History Center is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the merger with an exhibit of photographs and other materials on Manchester’s history.

“Manchester: From Sister City to South Richmond” opens Thursday and runs though August. Admission is included in the museum’s regular $8 admission.

Also, the Manchester Civic Association will commemorate the occasion April 20 at 7 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 1211 Porter St. The program will feature the Manchester Boys Choir, speakers and birthday cake.
