Mayo/14th Street Bridge Closed Tomorrow
If you take the Mayo/14th Street bridge to work you need to change your route for most of the month of April.
Starting on Sunday, April 4 at 9 p.m., the Mayo Bridge and Dock Street between 18th and 21st Street will close for routine maintenance.
The flood walls are important to keep the James River out of the city streets. But thanks to the normal wear and tear, plus the hundreds of cars that use the bridge every day, it’s time for the city to replace the guides in the ground that allow the flood walls to move.
That means no cars will be allowed to use the bridge during the work and the city knows that may upset some drivers.

Work is scheduled to end April 26.

Why do they have to do this work smack dab in the middle of the Shad Run?
I agree… bad timing for required work. the anncarrows launch is not as friendly as the 14th street launch.

Also Ancarrow’s is a different kind of fishing not suited for catch and release due to the excessive handling the fish must endure there. Most caught there will die.
It’s more than passing strange considering the great expense and time and effort that has gone into rehabbing this historic fish that this city would choose the few weeks of their spawning run for this project.
I also wonder what effect this will have on the annual Earth Day celebration that takes place at that location.
City reps have been quoted in the media as saying that they won’t ban fishing, but “would rather” those so inclined do it “someplace else”.
That comment tells me that our City leaders either don’t value this living slice of history ( one account of these magnificent treasures says of them ” Traditional Revolutionary War accounts treat American shad as the “savior fish” that saved George Washington’s troops from starvation after the harsh winter of 1777-78.”) or worse yet, don’t even know they exists.
