Patrick Henry Holds Fundraiser March 30
Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts held their first fundraiser last night at the school. Volunteers and board members worked hard to make the over-warm auditorium appealing.
Governor Robert McDonnell and Delegate Joe Morrissey both attended and spoke to the diverse crowd of philanthropists, politicians and citizens that attended. City Councilman, Marty Jewel, formerly opposed to the school but now a supporter, was there as were Kim Bridges RPS School Board chairperson and PH’s new Principal, Pamela Boyd. There was also a woman who had attended the school in the very first kindergarten class.
There were a few professed “on-the-fencers” who still need convincing but many were encouraged by the curriculum tables set up and the Green Cafe concept the school wants to provide in its cafeteria, which hopes to help support the curriculum through its meal choices.
Some may wonder why the school would need a fundraiser, and they’d probably be surprised to find out that when the school was shut down, every piece of furniture and equipment was removed from the building. The building was completely empty. It’s only furnishings now were donated but its kitchen remains empty of appliances. And, of course, much needs to be done to make the classrooms and bathrooms accessible to kids with disabilities.
At the fundraiser, Governor McDonnell presented the school with the $25,000 check he had announced he was giving from his surplus inaugural fund. It is hoped that last night’s fundraiser goes a long way to funding Phase I of the proposed renovations which would allow the school to open late July.
