Pictures & More Details On Forest Hill Park Trailwork
[slideshow id=45]
More than 100 volunteers braved cold, blustery winds Saturday at Forest Hill Park to plant several hundred new trees.
The plantings are a part of a project funded by the Friends of Forest Hill Park, the Richmond Area Midatlantic off-road Enthusiasts and the Department of Parks and Recreation, and fueled by volunteers from the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. More than 150 native and specialized species were planned to alleviate the damage caused by old trails that were improperly constructed. In addition, the volunteers replanted native species that were moved as part of the new trail construction.
The work Saturday is part of a long range plan to upgrade the trails system throughout the area, already one of the best on the East Coast, and to provide environmentally sound recreation in a way that
does not create additional runoff into the Chesapeake Bay.

I got there a bit late but was thrilled to see the amount of work that was done and am pleased to have been able to contribute.
I’m sorry I missed this one. I volunteered elsewhere when I suddenly had my Saturday morning free. I need to get on a list with the Richmond MORE.
Phil: here’s the link to MORE’s home page, you can sign up for their email list. They’re good about notifying for trail work at all of the local trails. Thanks to everyone who came out to help!!!

Correction: Chesapeake Bay Alliance was mentioned in the posting. The volunteers were recruited by both the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, in addition to those contacted by the Parks Department. I have corrected it above but wanted to do so in the comments as well.
Good correction… Jessica Barton and the volunteers from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation are doing a great job improving the James River habitat in this neck of the woods and deserve all the kudos they can get… great group of folks.
