Clear Your Walks and Car Tops
12 Comments »Have you tried to walk around the neighborhood? On most blocks you are forced to walk on the road which is hazardous for you and cars. Please take the time to clear your side walk not only is it the considerate thing to do you are required by city law.
Clear the snow on sidewalks adjacent to your property within 6 hours of snow stopping or by 11 a.m. the next day if snow continues to fall through the night.
Don’t forget your car either. If you are driving around please take the time to clear off the top of your car. The snow on your roof can come flying off unexpectedly and cause problems for those behind you.
Thanks to Boulevardizen for the reminder about the walks.

I’d also suggest, if your back can bear it, to help out elderly or disabled neighbors by at least shoveling the sidewalk in front of their house.
sure would be nice to have sidewalks.
I do love our sidewalks, but wish I hadn’t read this post. Felt obligated to do some shoveling only to discover that our snow shovel had broken yesterday (Steve?). Went to the shed and used a flat-edge shovel to smash through three inches of ice.
I’d like to see the city plow my street within 6 hours, instead of never, which is apparently their plan. No sidewalks in Stratford Hills but I say if they’re going to go around writing fines, they should do it in a plow so at least some of the neighborhood streets will be safe.
In a way it’s a very odd law because in my neck of the woods most folk don’t use the sidewalks even when they are clear of snow and ice.
It’s a real safety problem in these dark days since most walkers don’t wear reflective clothing.
ya, ven da plow my streets, I shovel der walks.
[...] Hills and Heights has a post about making sure your sidewalks and cartops are clear of snow. The argument was raised by readers that sidewalks would be cleared by residents once roads were cleared by the city. I see their point…The road outside of my house is still snow (ice) covered, making me not very interested in going anywhere. Maybe I’m just being a wuss, but I don’t have any desire to fishtail into my neighbor’s parked car. My sidewalks are clear, but the same cannot be said of most of my neighbors’ walks – making walking difficult with a three year old. I’m just sayin’. [...]
Not shoveling your sidewalks until the city clears the streets is just silly. It only hurts your neighbors not the city.
BTW Monday evening the plows came through my street and did an excellent job. They scraped so much snow and ice off that by noon when I went home for lunch the street was almost entirely clear. I think the city has actually done a great job.
I guess it depends upon where you live, Tom. From what I’ve seen around the H&H area, your experience is not the norm.
All in all the city did okay this year….I could get out Monday to get to work….no complaints here….well maybe they should’ve waited….then I could’ve avoided work…hmmm..
Plows came through westover hills west. I sure wish they’d thrown some sand/salt down to give a little traction to the icy slick that was left behind.
