Election Today
Go out and vote today. If you have a young child take them with you and give a short lesson on democracy. You give up all rights to bitch about government decisions if you don’t vote. I won’t be going out until lunch time so no local report on lines but the news is saying turnout is low right now (early morning) so no excuses.

I went at 9:30 and there were no lines whatsoever.
Not to mention you get a free Chik-fil-A sandwich if you have your “I Voted” sticker!
I voted around 9:45 AM, with no waiting. With the Governor’s race being making national news, I figured I’d have to wait in line this morning.
“Not to mention you get a free Chik-fil-A sandwich if you have your “I Voted” sticker!”
Of course you do.
Recently, some local bloggers went to a Chick-fil-a opening to get some free coupons and then blogged about it. I left a comment that I hope they can appreciate and take in good spirit:
“Thats quite a feat. I have heard about events like this and seen some mildly entertaining documentaries about them- “Hands On A Hard Body”, anyone?
But one thing I feel compelled to mention is the environmental problems associated with the cheap chicken that Chick-fil-a and other fast food chains serve. Massive chicken farms in places like Virginia’s Eastern Shore are poisoning the Chesapeake Bay and other bodies of water with stormwater runoff that is full of chicken pee and poop. Its a real problem that is killing the Bay.
I don’t mean to be a total kill joy, and I too enjoy a good chicken sandwich from time to time, but its something that people need to be educated about so that they can lobby their political representatives to fix. The fast food corporations keep the farms as independent agents so that they can wash their hands of it, so to speak, while the farmers claim they have raise massive amounts of chickens to stay competitive and solvent.
In short, I understand and in a sense admire your quest for cheap chicken, but something does need to change overall to save the environment.”
I probably should have left a link to the PBS documentary Poisoned Waters too, but like I said, I did not want to be a total kiiljoy either. It’s not easy to point to the environmental dangers of fast food. Chick-fil-a recently sponsored their annual charity dodgeball tournament at the downtown Richmond convention center- part of me wanted to put together a team to either play in it or picket it.
What will the candidates do about the cheap chicken problem?
Done. Voted around 8:30 with no lines. Shook Betsy Carr’s hand on the way in.
Still a buzz kill, even with caveats.
Update on all the chicken hoopla. The stratford hills chick-fil-a is not participating in giving a free sandwich to anyone wearing an “I voted” sticker, despite what the election site workers are telling everyone.
Off topic, but it looks like the time stamp for H&H comments hasn’t caught up with the end of Daylight Saving Time.
Scott’s always a killjoy, he delights in it. :)
Thanks Dan. Fixed now.
To stay on topic no lines at 12:30. Two neighbors were spotted as was Betsy Carr.
Hey, I call like I see ‘em.
Sorry to be such a killjoy, but I do think people need to be honest with themselves and the challenges we face:

To stay somewhat on topic, any political experts out there want to answer my question:
What will the candidates do about the agri-pollution in the Bay?
Well, let’s talk City Council candidates/members. They will support the stormwater utility, which provides a revenue stream to reduce flow and pay for treatment before stormwater runs into the river (yes, I know the James does not technically run into the CB). A council person will bite the hard bullet and contin ue to approve budget increases for water and sewer rates that are necessary to meet federal and state mandates. If you are interested in statewide candidates, I would point out that one of McDonnell’s largest individual contributors is Smithfield Foods, cited in every state where they do buisiness for environmental violations. What would Bob do? Less than nothing, in the name of “creating jobs”.
Check voting results for Fourth District, in Times Dispatch. Interestingly, most of the district voted Democratic at the statewide level.
