Deer Crossing
Drivers on Forest Hill Avenue experienced a backup today just after noon, when a deer leapt into a car crossing over Reedy Creek. The driver was (presumably) shaken but unhurt, and her vehicle badly damaged. The deer was put down by police. Some lanes were shut down while the deer was being removed and the street washed down.

We unfortunately arrived right in time to see the shot fired. Sad. Poor thing.
I wonder if it was the same deer I saw wandering around in Forest Hill Park on Saturday.
Hunting season isn’t fully underway, so we can expect more deer vs. vehicle encounters. Be aware of your surroundings when driving.
I wonder if this would happen if a traffic circle was in place??
Hunting season isn’t open at all in the City of Richmond, and won’t be.
Thanks for the chuckle, Zac:)
Actually, hunting is allowed in certain parts of the city utilizing only Bow and Arrow.
From the look of the city code, you’d need a might big lot to go hunting:
Hunting season loosely coincides with rutting, so deer behavior changes considerably and they turn up in places where they might not go the rest of the year. Whether hunting is allowed here or not, deer will be a-courtin’.
As an example, we had a deer gallop up our street here in Woodland Heights a few years ago, got spooked and sailed across our front porch and through our backyard, a couple of other yards, across Canoe Run Park and back down to JRPS.
Also, I think that it is possible for communities that otherwise don’t allow hunting to obtain special bow hunting permits in order to cull deer when they become more than nuisances and become traffic hazards, etc.
Rock Creek Park in DC has hundreds deer in it right now. There was a serious proposal to hire snipers to cull out the population, which as you can imagine caused a lot of controversy. Using professional marksmen seems a lot more humane and less hazardous than bow hunting.
As long as the professional marksmen use silencers. I can imagine the reaction to having gunshots popping off around an urban park.
