Jahnke Road Newsletter
The following information was gleaned from the second Jahnke Road Newsletter that is produced by the City of Richmond with the purpose of keeping folks involved and informed. Current and previous newsletters, traffic and accident information.
In mid July there was a meeting at the Lucille M. Brown Middle School to discuss the Jahnke Road construction. About 35 folks attended with the goal of finding out what options were being looked at and to voice concerns. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 6PM to 8PM at Crestwood Presbyterian Church, Boyd Hall located at 6627 Jahnke Road.
The options currently being considered include: two-lane divided alternative with a raised grassy median; a three-lane alternative with a central left-turn lane and a four-lane divided alternative with a raised grassy median.
Some concerns that were expressed and the city response:
- Additional lanes of travel will attract more cars (In general the public sentiment was not in favor of a four-lane roadway)
- Safety of school children and other pedestrian traffic (Sidewalk and/or shared use paths are planned with all proposed improvements under consideration)
- The inconvenience of GRTC bus passengers who now have to climb onto the bus by stepping over a roadside ditch. (Curb and gutter is planned with all proposed improvements under consideration and will eliminate roadside ditches making bus access much easier)
- Will the posted speed limit of 35 mph remain the same? (All improvements considered will retain the current posted speed of 35 mph)
- Will the design accommodate individuals with disabilities? (All proposed improvements will be ADA compliant and therefore all sidewalks will have access ramps)
- Will the mature trees along the corridor be removed due to proposed improvements? (All trees adjacent to the roadside edge have been located by the project surveyors and any design considered will seek to preserve as many of the existing trees as possible)
