Death Coming to Maymont

Immerse yourself in the Victorian era obsession of death, mourning and the afterlife during Maymont’s “Mourning Obsessions” on Saturday, October 24 from 5 – 7 p.m. Maymont Mansion is the setting for this unique tour focusing on the customs, beliefs and macabre memorabilia associated with a loved one’s passing in the 19th century.

“Mourning Obsessions” is part of Maymont Mansion’s special exhibition, “A Deeper Shade of Black: Mourning in the Age of Poe,” on display Tuesdays-Sundays, October 1-31 from 12 to 5 p.m. ($5 suggested admission). Joining other Richmond museums to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe’s birth, the exhibit features a private collection of period artifacts in addition to original Maymont pieces, and is dedicated to the Victorian-era obsession with the rituals of death and dying.
