Forest Hill Post Office is One of Six in City to Close

The Times-Dispatch is reporting that six richmond area post offices are slated to close and, whattya know, the one most convenient to the Hills and Heights area is closing.

The post office has been struggling with a sharp decline in mail volume as people and businesses switch to e-mail for personal contact and bill paying. The agency is facing a nearly $7 billion potential loss this fiscal year, despite a 2-cent increase in the price of stamps in May, cuts in staff and removal of collection boxes.

Hioaks? NO! That is so close to my house. Dang it.

First the DMV, then the movie theater, now the post office. On the upside, Cielito Lindo! Maldini’s! Crossroads! We can’t do anything involving the bureacracy but we can sure get fat :D

Looks like maybe the buford pharmacy might be our best option? since they’re also closing the southside branch

I’ll miss that handy dandy machine the Hioaks branch had in its lobby.

Every single time I go to that Hioaks post office, the line is OUT THE DOOR with people mailing packages for eBay or whatever. I eventually just gave up, and I now use the Stuart Station one on Floyd, because the line is shorter.

Hioaks has never seemed convenient to me. The only time it is open when I can get there is on Saturday morning. Maybe if some of the branches had evening (even if only until 7 pm)hours they would have more business. That said, I’m sorry so many post offices are closing.

Nobody goes there; it’s too crowded.

  7. posted by Adrien at August 4, 2009 2:36 pm [#]:

That doesn’t even make sense. If it’s so crowded, why are they closing it?

I use the machine out in the lobby, easy peasy. They’re closing it because overall mail volume is down. One tip I had is not to go on paydays because many people go to the post office for cashier checks and mail orders. I have been there and only seen 1 or 2 people in line, but then, I can go any ol’ time it’s convenient for me.

  9. posted by Dan at August 4, 2009 4:21 pm [#]:

How about they move the machine to Ukrop’s or Target? I’m going to miss that thing.

It’s a bad location anyway. Sorta like a roach motel traffic-wise, once you get in, you can’t get out. And as another fella said, no one goes there because it’s always too crowded
What we REALLY need is more pick-up boxes on the street corners, or at least re-locate the present ones to more accessible locations, drive up wise.
That one the corner of New Kent and the Blvd is a nightmare, as is the one at the corner of J road and Forest Hill Ave. They both require you to get outa your car to access the service.

I agree with Page and Dan. Not sure of the security needs, etc. but put a couple of those machines (that will take box shipments, sell stamps, etc) strategially around town and you can reduce even more post office branches.
I haven’t been in one of those lines in years.

I agree about the long lines…but my experience has been that the machine has been broken almost everytime I’ve tried to use it.

If “no one goes there” why is it so crowded? Sounds like it actually gets a lot of business…
