As it turns out, this gentle giant laid its boughs down as carefully as it could. While the garage will have to be rebuilt, most of what was stored within it survived; we lost only one panel of the fence; and much to my husband's chagrin, the SAAB was freed from the tree evidencing only a few small dents. Importantly, the timing of this spectacular event could not have been better, for earlier that day my six-month old daughter and I were watering my newly planted hostas at the very corner of the garage that took the hit; my dog Sue and I took a short nap at its base where it subsequently split; and the baby shower our neighbors threw for 65 people wrapped up about an hour before it fell. So, as I tell the story, this glorious tree, which has stood watch over our neighborhood for nearly a century and my family for almost three years, spent that beautiful summer day selecting the path of least destruction and then waited until it was free of kids, pets, and families before dropping its boughs. It did so on a quiet Saturday night, inconveniencing very few, and amazingly no one lost power, cable, or phone. This beloved friend will be greatly missed...
