Dr. Gruesome, Skeeter and Mr. Lobo at Stories
Comment now »With names like that how can you not want to be at Stories Comics on Saturday to meet these fellows. Although I haven’t seen this particular shows I might have to stop on by since it is right around the corner.
Official Press Release:
On Saturday, July 11, from 2 pm to 4 pm, Richmond area residents who remember the TV horror movie hosts of old will have a chance to contribute to a new documentary entitled, Virginia Creepers.
Sean Kotz, producer and director of the film, encourages people with affection for the genre to come out to Stories Comics in Forest Hill to meet Fox 35’s Dr. Gruesome and Skeeter, and nationally syndicated host, Mr. Lobo, all of whom will be in the film.
Kotz will also be conducting interviews with fans who remember or currently watch any of the hosts who originated in Virginia or Washington, DC markets.
“The documentary looks at more than 50 years of TV hosts, including Richmond’s two female hosts from the 1950s and 60s—Ghoulda and Hazel Witch, both from Channel 12.”
“Naturally,” Kotz added, “the Bowman Body and Dr. Gruesome will both feature prominently in the film as well.”
Local legend, Bill Bowman, played “The Bowman Body,” on Shock Theater on channel 8, then known as WXEX. Kotz has been working closely with Bowman and believes fans will enjoy seeing his interviews in the documentary.
Dr. Gruesome’s Movie Morgue was a kid friendly series that began with the classic Universal horror films like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolf Man. It quickly found an adult audience and at one point commanded a 49 percent share during its timeslot, running from 1988-1995.
Dr. Gruesome (played by Mark Bartholomew) spent most of his energy concocting cartoonish tortures for Skeeter, his annoying assistant, played by Matt Pak.
Mr. Lobo, the host of Cinema Insomnia on the AMGTV Network, began his show in Sacramento, CA, but can now be seen in several Virginia markets, where he is hugely popular.
According to Lobo, since 2005, when his show was picked up in the Tidewater area, he has mysteriously found himself drawn to Virginia over and over again.
In fact, he will be appearing in quite a few independent Virginia films this year. In addition to the Virginia Creepers documentary, Lobo will be in Eric Miller’s next B-movie and serial homage, Taste the Blood of Frankenstein.
