48 Hrs. Store Closed? False Alarm
I just swung by local landmark 48 Hrs. Store and found the doors chained and locked shut. Anybody know what’s up? It may not have much but it has a damn fine beer selection and is close to my house, so has a special place in my heart.
Editors Note Sunday 12:20: We have two confirmed reports in the comments that the store is in fact open. We apologize for any panic caused in the community and thank you all for keeping the rioting to a minimum.

The old joke was that the store was open 48 hours, but nobody ever knew which ones. I hadn’t heard anything about it closing, so maybe we won’t lose our beer store…
They were open when I drove past today around 6:00. Maybe it was just a vacation. I once asked why it was 48 hours. The answer was that they didn’t know. The current owners bought it with that name and never changed it.
Phew, this story gave me quite a scare. They’re open this morning, so it appears all is well. Their beer selection is truly amazing, and I have been told they will specially order beer by request.
Mark, If you are looking to order one of those hard to get beers, I also recommend that you hit Once Upon a Vine up in the Stratford Hills Shopping center. If you haven’t been they have mind numbing selection of beers and are real good folk. No arguing the selection of beers at 48 Hrs. though truly impressive for mini-mart.
48 Hours was a HopIn when I was a kid (15 years go maybe). It does have a nice beer selection, but I really wish they’d clean up that corner (and block really). It’s such an eye sore.
When I was a kid in Bon Air, we used to come up to the five & dime that was next to Stories – I think there was a kids’ clothing store there too, wasn’t there?
They have actually painted that building twice in the 6 years that I’ve been here and whenever the owners actually work the store, it gets cleaned up quite a bit, but then they find hourly workers and don’t seem involved at all and the place starts to look crappy. They just can’t seem to do any of the regular maintenance of dragging a weed eater out to the parking lot or to take a few of those lottery signs down.
Jennifer, how awesome was the Westover Hills Five and Dime? I used to get the tiny white paper bag with a dime or a quarter’s worth of lemon drops or butterscotches. I remember begging my mom to order me some tacky makeup kit I saw in a magazine when I was in first grade, and of course she wouldn’t, but as a consolation prize she took me to the five and dime and let me buy a bottle of barely pink Cutex nail polish. Which I promptly took to school and painted Mike Gregory’s nails pink on the day of his first Cub Scout meeting. I wish the Five and Dime was still there. :(
The Five and Dime was one of the last of its kind. My kids used to walk there. Wasn’t there a drug store or pharmacy (Westover Pharmacy?) across the street that also acted as a mini-post office?
The 5&10 rocked. You find anything there and it was such a small space. When that left and yes, there was a very upscale children’s clothing store, and an Interior Design business one of our Riverside Dr. residents ran. When all those closed, that whole strip mall area just went to dirt. The heart breaker for me now is The Forest. I used to love going there and grabbing a sub or steak and cheese and it’s just scummy now and reeks of tons of cig smoke. Too bad. Let’s not forget the church by SunTrust was a movie theater you could see flicks in for .50 and the pool hall was across the street and there was Riverside drug where Blockbuster is now, attached Dr. offices and an old fashioned soda counter.
