Animal Alerts: One Found Dog and Two Dogs Attacking Cats
Westover Hills Crimewatch Captain Noah Rogers provided the following alerts:
A dog has been recovered near the intersection of New Kent Avenue and 45th Street.
The animal is described as wearing a brown nylon dog collar. Attached to the collar are a rabies tag and dog license tag.
Call Gary Duke @ 512-2027 if you think this may be your dog.
Attacks on cats which might warrant keeping yours indoors for a few nights:
Over the last several nights there have been multiple incidents of cats being attacked by dogs in our area.
The location of these attacks has ranged from the 4500 block of Riverside Drive to the area of Forest Hill Avenue and Westover Hills Boulevard.
In two cases the dogs have entered yards and attacked the cats – the dogs are described as black in color and large in size. I have not received any reports of more than two dogs being involved.
The attacks have primarily occurred at night.

My broken record: Please keep a nametag on your dog’s collar. They cost $5 and can get your dog home to you faster than any other method.
For dog owners, if these two or three large dogs out at night are yours, they stand a real risk of being trapped or shot. If animal control picks them up and the owner can be identified, he will be charged. If not the dogs will be euthanized as dangerous. Don’t let your dogs out to roam. With recent occurences, even innocent dogs are guilty.
Shot by whom? I certainly hope no one is thinking about running around Westover Hills with the intent of discharging firearms in residential areas.
Even trained police officiers routinely miss moving animals, even at point blank range, sending lethal lead flying through the air, to strike who knows what(or who).
Not a pretty thought, but if a homeowner feels he or his family or his pet is threatened/attacked, he may shoot. If the police are confronted by an aggressive animal that moves toward them, they WILL shoot.
And that’s exactly what I’m afraid of.
Shooting and hitting what you aim at are two VERY different things.
How many residents in Westover Hills are skilled enough in marksmanship to be sure that they will hit their taget and that a misplaced shot will not take out some innocent child or jogger who happens to be in the neighborhood ?
Even the police, with their extensive training, often come a cropper when confronted with a raging animal. Witness that video captured by a local TV station a year or so ago where an officer and a television crew were confronted by an aggressive pit bull .
Caught on tape. She drew and fired at point blank range… and missed entirely.
You are right. It certainly is not a pretty thought..
