City removing and adding trees
You may have noticed that some city trees have been marked for removal in and around the Hills and Heights area. The city has posted a list of trees designated to be cut down. You might also see recently planted trees with “green gators” around them. John over at Church Hill People News provides some info about how you can help these young trees get established.
… please fill [the green gators] once a week — and maybe even talk with your neighbors about helping you. (The fill-up slot is underneath the label at the top of the bag.) These bags are important to the survival of the small trees — over 50% of new trees fail because of lack of water, and rainfall is short this winter.
Thanks for helping make our neighborhood a greener place to live.
If you have questions, or need help with how to fill the bag, call Alli at 782-1170 or Marion at 644-1347.

Worth noting, the city’s “Adopt-A-Tree” Program is only $50 and they’ll replant your old tree with a more suitable variety, and give you one of those Tree Gator bags (retail around $30). It’s a BARGAIN. They took out a dead maple in front of my house and put in a large Chinese Pistache sapling—We eyed a similar sized tree at Great Big Greenhouse for $65. Plus, they planted it, mulched it and all I have to do is water it!
