From the RTD: A Richmond police SWAT team successfully ended a standoff last night with an armed man threatening to harm himself in an apartment in the 4000 block of Forest Hill Avenue. The Avenue was closed for about 2 hours last night and everything ended peacefully and roads opened back up by 11. No [...]

Nickel Bridge Postcard

Not much of a news article but Nickle Bridge was mentioned in the paper so I am using it as an excuse to post an old postcard. The bridge was mentioned as having some of the worst potholes in the city. There are some immediately south of the Boulevard Bridge (Nickel Bridge) in the northbound [...]

Who Has the Best Burger?

I want to know where everyone thinks the best burger in Hill’s and Heights can be found. A poll has been added to the website for a limited time. Select the restaurant that has the best burger and defend your selection or point out a glaring omission on my part in the comments.

Doc’s Barber Shop

I have been going to Doc’s Barber Shop ever since moving into the neighborhood. It is everything I want in a barber, cheap and quick. So far my attempts to have our daughter’s hair cut at Doc’s have been thwarted by my lovely and rational wife. Since I am denied the joy of Doc’s artistry [...]

St. Patrick’s Days at O’Toole’s

The traditional raising of the white tent that marks  St. Patrick’s arrival into town is missing this week. That is because the addition at O’Toole’s will be open and all the revelry will be inside this year. As always O’Toole’s is not content with a one day celebration and instead goes for 3 straight days [...]

Lane Closure on Lee Bridge

Sorry for the late notice but just found out that the north bound land of the Robert E. Lee bridge will be closed Thursday, March 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. so that the bridge can be inspected.

Toad’s Place Will the Show Go On?

Reading conflicting reports this morning on the state of this weekend’s shows. The RTD is saying not likely and Richmond BizSense is saying likely. The Richmond BizSense article is definitely better researched and gives some excellent insight into what it takes to run a musical venue. Snippets from both below. Richmond BizSense article here. RTD [...]

Special Guests With Happy Lucky Combo Tonight

Two musical guests Jonathan Greenberg on trumpet and John Winn on clarinet. As always the music starts around 8:00 at O’Tooles. If you see some people playing chess stop by and say hello. A group of us gather every Wednesday to play. We don’t take chess too seriously and welcome all levels, unless of course [...]

State of the James

Summary from RTD: Reducing bacteria levels in the James River in the Richmond area could take seven years or more and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, officials said today. State environmental officials estimated the extent of the cleanup during a meeting this afternoon at Virginia Commonwealth University. About 30 people attended the meeting, including [...]

A Westover Hills resident has recovered a black male puppy.  The puppy is described as approximately 4 months old with large white patches on his chest. He appeared to be traveling through the neighborhood with an auburncolored dog. Please post in the comments if you might know this pup. Dog was claimed.

Smoking Ban Signed – What About The Forest?

The RTD tells us about the smoking ban that Kaine signed into law yesterday. It reads in part: Gov. Timothy M. Kaine yesterday formally signed into law legislation that will ban smoking in nearly all public restaurants in the state. Seated in a Virginia Beach restaurant that already has made the switch to smoke-free dining, [...]

Toad’s Place Closed

I only went there once and I enjoyed it but at least for now Toad’s Place is closed. Details in the RTD and more is promised tomorrow: A posting on the inside and outside walls of the live music club at 140 Virginia St. on the Canal Walk reads that due to “serious default in [...]

Hawaii on Semmes

I thought this would be appropriate due to the weekend weather. The mural is on Semmes between 14th and 15th and is starting to fade.  This photo was taken in May of 2007.

Help for the Unemployed

Having personally experienced the joy of unemployment I know that any and all help is appreciated, so it was good to read about The Capital Region Employment Transition Center that is opening today in Henrico County. The RTD has all the details. The Capital Region Employment Transition Center will begin helping displaced workers from eight [...]

Meeting on Bacterial Pollution in the James

Saw this notice on the Woodland Heights yahoo group. The meeting will be hosted by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) this coming Tuesday, March 10, at VCU. This is an opportunity to learn about what is being done and to provide input. Given that financial resources for cleaning up polluted waters are scarce these [...]

Advertising Changes

We have changed the ads a bit by making one larger and the others a bit heftier. Hopefully they don’t distract from the unbridled joy of reading Hills and Heights everyday. The reason for the change is to give advertisers some options on reaching out to folks here at Hills and Heights and to people [...]

Richmond Public School Budget Gets Help

From the RTD: The Richmond school system will come about $8 million closer to its budget goal for next year thanks to federal economic stimulus money it is receiving. But that still leaves city schools about $8 million short of current funding. The additional money means teacher jobs are safe, employees won’t have to take [...]

Spring Ahead

Don’t forget that tonight (technically tomorrow morning) is Daylight Savings Time. Before you go to sleep add an hour to your clock. This is also a nice reminder to put fresh batteries in and check all the smoke alarms in your house are working. Your useless fact for the day is that Daylight Saving Time [...]

Forest Hill Neighborhood Facebook Group

The post a few days ago about Sierra Club Fall of the James Group on Facebook reminded me that I failed to post about another neighborhood Facebook Group: Forest Hill Neighborhood. It currently has 63 members and has an active creator so I think it will grow. Currently they are asking the question: What do [...]

The City of Richmond is hosting E-cycle on Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Diamond’s blue parking lot at 3301 North Boulevard.  Some items are free such as computers but there is a fee for tvs depending on the tv. North Richmond Times has done a better job of finding [...]
