Who Has the Best Burger?
I want to know where everyone thinks the best burger in Hill’s and Heights can be found. A poll has been added to the website for a limited time. Select the restaurant that has the best burger and defend your selection or point out a glaring omission on my part in the comments.
I have not eaten a burger at all of the locations so it is possible I missed a gem of a burger. Others I intentionally left off because I felt that they belong in another category or are a national chain. Benny’s an example of the former and O’Charley’s an example of the latter. Ambiance should not be a factor (Liberty Valance would win) but the fries can and should play a role in the best burger. If at any point in this post you just started humming “Cheeseburger in Paradise” by Mr. Buffet you are banned from the poll, I am sorry but there are just some things I am against. Fortunately for you the reader I can’t tell (yet) what you are humming so my attempts at controlling freedom of expression are futile and Parrotheads will be allowed to vote and hum.

I was pleasantly suprised at a perfectly cooked, medium rare, burger I ate at Capitol Ale House. Not to thick, quality meat with at least a %20 fat content and a well toasted kaiser. I topped it wiht the Maytag bleu cheese, an expensive item, but they did not skimp. My only dissapointment was the lettuce and tomato setup. I understand it is a classic requirment for a burger, but I wish there were other options when these ingredients were not in season. I think it takes away from an excellent sandwich.
Other people in our party also ordered burgers, they were equally well prepared. Although it was a tad expensive, I thought it was a good value. On Monday nights they have $1 burgers during the early evening. These are not as good, and they are just the burger, no cheese, no side. What you want for a buck?
I would never Buffet you. That would just be cruel.
Oh, and I voted for O’Tooles because that burger with the onion ring on it is just the most incredibly perfect thing EVER.
I second the vote for O’Toole’s ‘O Burger’.
I hate to go for a chain, but Five Guys just does it for me
i am thinking roys’ ought to be somewhere in that list. also, i find that dot’s back has a pretty good slab of beef.
Jacqui – I almost didn’t include 5 Guys because technically they are a chain but they are my favorite as well so they made the list
Whinemedineme – First off great blog you got going. I wanted to stay on topic so limited the options to right in this neighborhood. What is this Roy’s you speak of? Totally agree with the Dot’s Back Inn statement. Nine out of ten times that is what I order when I go there, plus great fries.
I want to say legend has a great burger but you just never know what you’re gonna end up with. Last weekend 3 people at our table ordered burgers, two were perfectly delectable, the third was a cobble stone in burger clothing. The bun was dry and hard and so was the burger. But dang, when they hit it right, they make a good burger.
I also like the english burger at O’toole’s. Who thought an english muffin could make such a big difference?
Dots has a good burger. Five Guys =is fair. O’Toole’s is a good burger.
But, for my money, the best burgers are to be found at the Rose Marie Inn on Patterson, west of Parham.
Has anyone ever ordered food at the Stratford Grille? That would be brave. I once witnessed a fella eating hot wings at the locker room. Now that was just plain stupid.
Cary Burger and fries. Virtually in the H & H neighborhood, and best tats, piercings and dreads in the city.
@JJ: HA!
I ate at the stratford grille once. The burger was fried up by a distracted bartender. This was lunch time so i was a little surprised to see the geriatric rosé drinkers waxing poetic at the other end of the bar. It was not a gustatory delight.
RockFalls Tavern has the best bacoon cheeseburger ever! Second is Carytown Burger and Fries.
richard h: aw shucks, thanks. roy’s big burger/ lakeside. it is an experience but it is a good burger. no seating and it is a walk up. get the double. while the burgers are good (and real cheap) they can be overwhelmed by a bit-too-big-bun.
