Belle Island Closed
If you were planning to take the family for a nice walk on Belle Island this weekend, you are out of luck. If you want to take the family for a nice walk anytime in the next 2-3 weeks you are out of luck. Access to the island is closed due to debris falling on to the pedestrian bridge.
Richmond public works officials said they hope to approve a design today for scaffolding that will be erected along roughly 100 feet of the pedestrian bridge from the north bank of the James River to the island. The scaffolding is necessary to protect pedestrians from being struck by debris, such as a three-foot length of concrete that fell from the Lee Bridge on Saturday afternoon and forced city officials to close access to Belle Isle.

You can still across the rocks from the southside.
Why haven’t the local news stations discussed the closure of the south side bridge when talking about the ped bridge? Is it due to VDOT’s involment?
The other bridge closing was covered a month or so ago, and as John mentions, you can still gain access from the south bank across the rocks. It does seem worth mentioning that both the easy ways to the island are closed. I just hope they open at least one of them back up before the warm weather really hits, or there will be drunken ankle-breakings and/or drownings every other weekend.
An example of the Parks’ Department being stretched really thin. They are doing a good job with what they have, but they have so little.
