South of the James Market to Return May 2
From Kathy Graziano’s 4th District Update we learn that the first day of the popular (35,000 visited last year) South of the James Farmer’s Market will be May 2nd. This year there will be more of a focus on farm raised/produced goods, organics and produce. I would like to make a personal plea that the Texas BBQ does not go away. There is little better in life than having some good BBQ for breakfast.
For information contact Karen Atkinson who serves as the Market Manager at either 513-3100 or www.themarketumbrella@msn.com.
I just wish that Tex would arrive early so his set up would not require a lot of other people shifting around. That said, who knew that the new Forest Hill breakfat of champions would be either Tex’s BBQ or Cielito Lindo’s breakfast burrito.
Would like to know more about your market Vender list what they selling, beginning & e4
ending Time of Market
Thanks

Sure, Agnes. Market begins May 2, runs through the end of November. Vendors will come in and set up between 6 and 7:45 am, must be in place and all vehciles parked by 7:45. Open for business at 8 am, through noon. Vendors list is still incomplete, but so far includes Amy Hicks organic garden produce and flowers, Victory Farms, Fertile Crescent, Walnut Hill farm, Faith Farm, Bill Heath, and a still growing list of growers, 17 in all. Ten prepared food vendors, including Blanchards and Koralee coffee, the jerky guy, Big Daddy’s barbecue, several bakers. A total of 41 vendors so far, list growing.
I should add for those prospective vendors out that, (Tex), you must fill out an application, available online or through the market manager or this office.
Set up at SOJ does not begin at 6. Vendors are not allowed in the market until 7 a.m. Market is open at 8 a.m.
Why is the market starting so late this spring, when we’re having such mild weather?
Starting the same time this year as it did last year…first weekend in May. It’s because the local vendors telling us that’s the earliest we can expect locally grown produce, reliably… Average last frost in Richmond is Mid-April.
