Free Cat & Dog Adoptions for Richmond Residents
News Release from the City of Richmond:
WHO: City of Richmond Animal Care and Control
Hill’s Science Diet
WHAT: Richmond Animal Care and Control is partnering with Hill’s Science Diet, leaders in pet nutrition, to transform the lives of Richmond’s shelter cats and dogs. Change a Pet’s Life Day will allow the first ten qualified adopters to adopt a new and loving pet, free of charge, courtesy of Hill’s Science Diet. This also includes the spaying or neutering, as well as a goody bag for your new pet.
WHEN: Saturday, January 24 from noon to 3:30 p.m.
WHERE: Richmond Animal Care and Control
Richmond, VA 23222
BACKGROUND: According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), between six and eight million cats and dogs enter U.S. shelters each year. Providing a loving home for a shelter animal not only saves the life of a deserving pet, but also makes room for another cat or dog to enter a shelter and eventually find a devoted and caring adopter. Richmond’s Animal Care and Control division is committed to providing humane care for abused and stray animals, helping them to overcome challenges and find placement in safe and healthy homes. The City is encouraging all interested residents to take advantage of this exciting opportunity for Richmond’s only open admissions shelter. Residents who are unable to adopt a pet can also help transform the life of a cat or dog by visiting www.feedingisbelieving.com for the chance to have $5,000 donated in your name to a shelter of your choice.
Editor’s note: There is some additional information at the Richmond Animal Care and Control site including the 16 dogs that are available for adoption. My favorites are Dog-Dog and Ziggy. Richmond Animal Care and Control are accepting applications prior to the Saturday event which is expected to have a high turnout. Adoption applications are available online here.
Growing up there was always at least one or two dogs and cats in our family. They are a wonderful addition to most families but are a big responsibility. Adopting a dog or cat is not something to be done on a whim. The American Kennel Club has a list of the responsibilities that you need to be aware of before adding a four legged member to the family and the Humane Society of Indianapolis has a list for cats.
