O’Toole’s Expansion Update
Richmond Magazine blog reported awhile back that the expansion of O’Toole’s will be completed by March 1st. The delay has been due to zoning issues.

A smoke free pub – that’s expanding. Can we finally say that a no smoking law would not hurt business?
Eric the RTD had an article on Mar 1, 2007 about going smoke free and I remember a follow up article where the manager or owner of O’Toole’s talked about an increase in business. There is this article from Jan. 8, 2008 Sales up, but ban worries bar owner but you can only see the summary and headline.
I can attest to the fact that O’Toole’s business has A) increased and B) shifted to earlier in the evening. There’s far more activity during the lunch and dinner hours and not so much after ten.
I spoke to John last night when I picked up my burger and evidently the “zoning issues” involve Ye Olde Adequate Parking Spots. I have no idea why, since there’s a decent-sized lot in the back and half the people are on foot anyway.
Not so much after 10? Considering they have a ten seat bar and not really any big screens to watch sports, why would you go there after 10. Once the new section opens up that will give me plenty of reason to go after 10.
They had quite a few patrons that went later to hang out and smoke at the bar. I wasn’t suggesting that there was anything untoward about the lighter traffic at those times, but you’re right – there probably will be more late customers when the other side opens.
I think it’s great that O’Toole’s & Maldini’s are smoke free, freedom of choice in action. Our Gov should stay out of it, period.
