Braxton Bowing Out
School Board chair and 4th District rep George Braxton will not seek re-election this fall, citing the ever-popular “focusing more on my growing family and career” as his reason for stepping down.
Two questions spring immediately to mind:
- Are West and Braxton it or will more follow suit?
- Who’s best for the 4th District now?
It’s going to be an interesting few months.

8th District rep Joan Mimms is also leaving office at the end of this term.
This is very interesting…remember how hard Braxton held on to his chair when West tried to overthrow him? Braxton must of picked up a Titanic deck chair.
So why is Mimms leaving?
Check out the Maven –he is running for board. http://jamesrivermaven.blogspot.com/
Mimms is 70-plus years old and wants to spend more time with her children and grandchildren. She deserves to have the additional time. Her husband passed away within the last two years, I have heard.
70-plus? I would have never guessed that. She looks significantly younger. Bless her heart to be able to work on board through such grief. She deserves many thanks for her service.

On May 22, 2008, George Braxton endorsed my candidacy on the Friends of Fourth District Schools group site. In George’s words:
After three and a half years on the Board, I feel I have a good grasp of what it takes to be an effective Board member. The representative must be independent AND able to work with others. They must be willing to listen to interested groups WHILE practicing fact-based decision making. You have to know and face the reality of our schools BUT never stop wanting something better for our children.
Bert has stayed on top of the local school issues while being a wealth of knowledge for national trends and best practices. He will not be bullied by the Administration, activists, unions or politicians but he will always listen to other points of view.
Bert is a frequent supporter AND critic of Richmond Public Schools. He has challenged me when he thought I was wrong and supported me when he thought I was right (he would point out that the former was more frequent than the latter). His position, however, has remained consistent…he always wants what’s best for the kids. I have appreciated his scrutiny and believe that that skill will serve the schools and our district well.
The Fourth District should continue the trend of having strong consensus builders and leaders on the School Board and elect Bert Berlin.
