City Park Restoration
Forest Hill Park takes center stage in a T-D article on the state of Richmond’s major parks.
Over the past few years, however, the park made a comeback. The city repaired granite picnic fireplaces built in the 1930s and a historic building, the Stone House. Hundreds of trees were planted.
This winter, the city plans to return the muddy cattail haven to its past grandeur as a scenic lake where Richmonders once swam and skated. The cost: $1.2 million.
Could the park finally see the long-promised lake work?

Ha, I’ll believe this when I see it. I wonder how many shell casings and liquor bottles they’ll dredge up?
Can’t wait to see this! As long as I’ve been in Richmond, that bottom area has been terribly neglected and the Gaston flood certainly didn’t help. Hope the improvements include repairing the walkway just downstream of the lake.
I grew up in the area, and when I was a kid the lake had ducks, yellow-belly perch, a small island in the center with a little log house, the size of a large dog house, for the ducks to sleep in at night. It was quite lovely.
Hope the lake can be restored. I remember it when it was beautiful too, and it certainly could be again.
Just noticed that the Forest Hill Park sign that was recently erected was gone. Any idea what happened to it?
The sign was removed because the Friends of Forest Hill were unhappy with it. They said the font was not the same as the original, and are paying for a new sign.
The Department of Parks will file its applicaion for environmental permits in the next few days, and has earmarked the money for remediation of the lake, as well as spillway repairs.
